Carl Junction vs. Webb City: Which Joplin Suburb Fits Your Family?
Both are top-rated Joplin suburbs with strong schools, low crime, and easy commutes. But they have distinct personalities. Here is how to decide which one is right for you.

If you are relocating to the Joplin area — or simply ready to leave the city for a quieter neighborhood — Carl Junction and Webb City are almost always the first two suburbs that come up. Both are excellent choices. Both have strong schools, low crime rates, and easy access to Joplin's jobs and amenities. But they are not the same place, and the right choice depends on what matters most to your family.
I have lived and worked in this area for over 27 years. Here is my honest take on both communities.
Carl Junction: Tight-Knit and Growing
Carl Junction sits about 8 miles north of downtown Joplin, just off Route 171. It has grown steadily over the past decade but has managed to hold onto its small-town feel — Friday night football games, neighbors who know each other, and a genuine sense of community pride.
Schools: Carl Junction R-1 School District is consistently one of the top-rated districts in Jasper County. The high school has strong academic and athletic programs, and class sizes tend to be smaller than you would find in Joplin proper.
Home prices: Carl Junction offers excellent value. You can find solid three-bedroom homes in established neighborhoods in the $160,000–$220,000 range, with newer construction pushing higher. The price-per-square-foot is competitive with Webb City.
Commute: About 15–20 minutes to most Joplin employers. Easy access to I-44 makes it practical for anyone commuting toward Carthage or Neosho as well.
Joplin Regional Airport sits right between both suburbs — a genuine convenience for families with travel in their lives.
The feel: Carl Junction is where people plant roots. You will find a lot of families who moved here for the schools and never left. If you want a neighborhood where kids ride bikes and people wave from their porches, this is it.
Webb City: Charming, Walkable, and Historically Rich
Webb City is about 5 miles east of Joplin, and it has a character all its own. The historic downtown — with its brick streets, local shops, and the iconic King Jack Park — gives Webb City a sense of place that newer suburbs often lack.
Schools: Webb City R-7 School District is another strong performer. The district has earned a reputation for academic rigor and a well-rounded extracurricular program. Webb City High School's football program is legendary in Missouri — if that matters to your family, it will matter a lot.
Home prices: Webb City's historic neighborhoods offer charming older homes at accessible prices, often in the $130,000–$190,000 range. Newer subdivisions on the east side of town push into the $200,000s and above.
Commute: Webb City is actually closer to Joplin's commercial corridors along Range Line Road than Carl Junction is. If you work in east Joplin or near the hospital district, Webb City may be the more practical choice.
The feel: Webb City has a strong civic identity. People here are proud of their town's history and invested in its future. The downtown revitalization over the past several years has made it an increasingly attractive place to live, not just pass through.
